La Chula Crew was founded in late 2017 by a small group of womxn who wanted to better their communities by uplifting folks with positivity and support, helping promote small businesses, empowering individuals, giving back to their communities, and rounding up others who want to do the same. La Chula Crew stands for commUNITY because we believe that there is strength and unity in numbers. The more of us that can give back to our communities, support and empower each other, the faster we can create a better place for everyone.
In late 2019, La Chula Crew proudly became a California State Nonprofit. We continue to strive to make our communities a better place to this day.
We consistently support & empower womxn and families by providing essential items and resources, such as food, gifting new & gently used clothing, underwear, bedding, toiletries, diapers/wipes, camping gear - along with providing resources such as support groups, non-traditional therapy/counseling, protection & safety tools, and more. Anything we can do to help, we are there!
We are very thankful for our wonderful partnerships, which help us build and connect with the community to offer more resources.
One of our passions is making sure folks don’t go hungry. In early 2022, we became a partner agency with Feeding San Diego. This amazing partnership has helped us to now offer 3-4 free food distributions a week in the south bay. To help us bring this service to the community we partnered with SoCal Girls Fast Pitch, Operation Samahan, National City Public Library, and Boys and Girls Club of South County to host our weekly distributions at their locations. Before establishing these partnerships, our organization was collecting donations and spending $300-600 a month on food to distribute to the community. We are so thankful for these amazing partnerships which now allow us to feed 500+ households every week - all completely free for the community!
We are strong advocates of healing through helping, and we believe it is important to offer healing opportunities for the community. Another of our astounding partnerships that helps to make this possible is with Marion, owner of Marion’s Fish Market & Restaurant in Seaport Village, as the home for our monthly support group. We also worked together to bring a beautiful mural to her patio, painted by a young high school artist Zenya Acevedo. We love that this partnership offers a space for us to come together to share not just our struggles, but also our strengths and passions with each other.
Once a month we partner with Illuminate Healing, a sound bath and meditation healing collective, to offer what we call Fill Your Cup. This is a gathering the last Tuesday of every month at Presidio Park from 4-6pm where we meditate together and enjoy a beautiful sound bath. We then all reflect on the experience, journal, and share with each other as a group. The intent of this gathering is to take time for ourselves to refill our own energy after a long month of giving to others.
Supporting and empowering youth in the community is another passion of ours. We are grateful to have a weekly class at Lindsay Community School where we bring the young ladies there, many of whom are pregnant and/or parenting, showcasing amazing individuals and opportunities. We have had classes on a range of topics such as hormonal health, healing practices, meditation, art, motivational speakers, skill sharing/tutorials, and more!
Another youth program we are proud of is our SUHi Crew - an exclusive program with students at Sweetwater High School in National City. With this program we are trying to share all that goes into community work with the next generation and hopefully inspire a few to pursue careers in mutual aid/social work. We love working with the students, hearing from their perspective. We especially love learning from them as well and giving them the space and freedom to also bring their ideas to the program and work we do.
We are extremely proud to offer the services we do and can’t wait to see where we will be in another 5 years!
